Kristin Horman, DDS

Owner

“I enjoy the relationships with my patients—getting to know them more personally,” says Dr. Horman, whose practice focuses on orthodontics. “I also enjoy the positive outcome and well-being that a patient experiences after treatment. Particularly with orthodontics, I enjoy seeing the change that occurs as the problems begin to resolve and the patient gets to experience better function and a beautiful smile.”

Dr. Horman strongly believes in a patient’s right to choose what they feel is the best treatment for their particular situation. “In order for them to make good decisions, they need to be educated about their options,” she says. “I do my very best to communicate to them the information they need to make the right decision. Ultimately it is their smile, and they should have the opportunity to decide what is best for them.

“Nothing gives me more pleasure than when a patient is happy with their teeth and is proud to flash a big smile! I am also very aware that a great deal of anxiety is associated with visiting the dentist. I truly care, and I strive to make each patient’s visit as pleasant and pain-free as I possibly can.”

In her spare time, Dr. Horman enjoys spending time with family and friends, traveling, and cooking. She supports charitable organizations in general but strongly believes in providing support to the charities and organizations that service the local community.

Harold E. Butler, DDS, MHA

“I went into dentistry because I enjoy the combination of art and science, the variety and challenge, and making people happy,” says Dr. Butler, oral surgeon. “I am casual, straightforward, and open with patients. I try to give them enough information to make good decisions about their dental health. Most of all, I care about what is best for the patient. It keeps my head out of the clouds and my feet on the ground.”

In his spare time, Dr. Butler enjoys reading about history and religion, classical music, and supporting Christian endeavors in the community.

Omar G. DeOliveira, DDS

“I chose dentistry because of my interest in the health care field and the opportunity to create a good impact in patients’ lives through our work and relationship with them,” says Dr. DeOliveira. “The results of our work include giving patients a beautiful smile, helping them when they are in pain, rehabilitating their chewing function, and creating a lasting bond with them, which is important to me.”

“I’m laid-back, informal. I like to joke with the patients and staff to create a happy atmosphere. I like to give quality care to patients in a cost-efficient way. My goal is always a happy dental experience, painless and with spiritual encouragement as well. I’m able to perform a wide variety of procedures, including fillings, root canals in molars, extractions, implants, dentures, and more. I don’t need to refer patients to specialists, and I’m familiar with all the dental issues that the patient might have.”

In his free time, Dr. DeOliveira likes to help in church outreach with information about oral health.

Fred L. Rudman, DDS

“I graduated from Western Maryland College with a degree in English,” says Dr. Rudman.  “At the time I thought I would become an English teacher. Despite my love for literature, I felt a calling to dentistry.

“Dentistry affords me the opportunity to directly improve the quality of my patients’ lives. Here at Robinwood, I am so happy to be a part of a team that continually strives to provide the highest level of personal and professional service in a caring and gentle manner. I love that my carreer allows me to be a diagnostician. Much like a detective, I follow clues to determine the source of my patients’ discomfort. I also love that my profession enables me to fix broken teeth in much the same way that a carpenter or a mechanic fixes the problems that he confronts.

“I function as an educator as well, teaching my patients the role that good hygiene plays in dental health. The artistic aspect of dentistry—through which it is possible to recreate form, function, and beauty—is most enjoyable. However, it is the personal interaction with folks of all ages that brings me the most joy.

Dr. Rudman enjoys gardening, fly fishing mountain streams, and traveling. He is grateful for his wife, children, grandchildren, and the community in which he resides.

Carl S. Appleton, DDS

“It brings me satisfaction to know that I work in the field that treats the number one infectious disease in the U.S.—the disease that causes cavities,” says Dr. Appleton. “Accomplishing procedures successfully brings me daily satisfaction in my work.”

“My philosophy of care is to give each of my patients my undivided attention, listen to their concerns, and provide them with a plan that is customized for them to meet their individual goals. I take pride in providing my patients with comfort, security, and in some cases hope. Of course, I’m proud to give them a good-looking smile.”

Dr. Appleton enjoys being involved with his family, church, and community. In his spare time, he bikes, plays golf, and watches sports. He has also taught oral health to the Frederick County public schools for the past four years, sharing that “educating elementary students is a great joy of mine.”

Niraj P. Patel, DDS

I find dentistry to be a very challenging and rewarding profession,” says Dr. Patel. “Growing up, I witnessed how poor oral health affected my grandmother, and I wanted to help prevent others from enduring the same hardships. I enjoy being able to make significant improvements in people’s lives by restoring their self-confidence, self-image, and ability to eat and speak properly.”

“I’m passionate about my work and easy to talk to. I try to learn about my patients on a more personal level to make them feel more comfortable. My concerns are always tailored toward my patients. I want patients to understand exactly what is going on in their mouth and to be actively involved in their treatment plans so I am able to meet their needs. I am committed to educating my patients on their oral health conditions, dental procedures, and oral hygiene practices. I truly try to earn patients’ respect, rather than expect it.”

“Being born and raised in Maryland, I naturally feel a strong tie to my local community. I always strive to give back and therefore provide free screenings and treatment at community events, helping those in need with their oral care and treatment.”

Dr. Patel enjoys playing basketball and completing home improvement projects. He loves spending time with his family. “One of my newer passions is traveling,” he says. “I hope to be able to see the world and the beauty and diversity it has to offer.”

Eric Cho, DDS

“As a dental provider, I feel that communication is vital to a successful doctor-patient relationship,” says Dr. Cho. “I realized very early on that patients really appreciated it when I took the time to explain why certain problems arose and the various ways we could try to fix them. In addition, I find it very beneficial to try to put myself in my patients’ shoes and always consider, Is this a treatment I would choose for myself?”

“I consider myself to be conservative when proposing treatment and continually strive to make appointments quicker and more painless. I am fun-loving and a positive thinker.”

In his spare time, Dr. Cho likes to try all types of food, play golf, and snowboard.

Ryan Williams, DDS

“I chose dentistry because it combines several areas that I enjoy,” says Dr. Williams. “I like doing intricate work with my hands. I enjoy spending time with patients, discovering their priorities for care, educating them on the treatment options that are available to reach their goals, and then following through with the treatment plan. My goal is to treat every patient with gentleness and respect—just as I would want to be treated.”

In his free time, Dr. Williams enjoys hiking with his wife, Kristi, and dog, Stanley. He also enjoys woodworking as well as flying radio-controlled and full-sized aircraft.

Jeffrey Martins, DDS

“From an early age, I learned about dentistry and I wanted to be involved in the dental field,” says Dr. Martins. “There are many aspects in dentistry that I enjoy, but the one that gives me the most satisfaction is to facilitate healing. Having a toothache can be some of the worst pain ever felt in one’s life!

“Arresting disease and establishing a healthy oral environment is my primary focus. Once my patients have a healthy oral environment, my focus shifts to creating desirable aesthetics.”

Dr. Martins enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, and playing strategy games. He has traveled extensively on dental humanitarian trips including visits to the Philippines, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh and Paraguay.
