Dr. Butler received his dental education at the University of Maryland. He also completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Maryland. He has been in practice since 1975.

Dr. Butler is a member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, the Frederick County Dental Association, a fellow of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American College of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was on faculty at Johns Hopkins University from 1988-1990 full-time, and in 1991-2006 part-time.

In his past, Dr. Butler has worked as a missionary dentist in Asia.
